I’ve actually been doing this for a long time, under the pseudonym CarveMan on the ski.com.au forums. 10 years, 25k posts, but it didn’t really occur to me that people were actually reading them.
Back in January 2010, I had a wonderful trip to Europe which resulted in a spectacular couple of days in Chamonix. So I did as any good, committed forum citizen is duty bound to do, and plastered the Internet with reports and pictures designed to make my friends in Australia jealous.
A few months later I was clicking around in the admin pages of my web host where the images for these reports were located, and noticed a massive spike in traffic – approx 100x the previous month. It peaked in January, around the time the reports were posted, but the ongoing traffic has been many multiples of what it was previously.
The people are out there, and they seem to be interested in reading what I have to say.
So once this revelation was made I decided to make my own little home on the Internet. I had registered aussieskier.com a number of years ago, but it had merely been a pointer to personal Web Galleries, Wedding Photos etc.
What will become of it, I do not know. My intention is to start out posting about the things I already posted about on ski.com.au – General Skiing, Travel, Equipment and also posting Snow Reports from Mt Buller on the weekends.
There’s enough PR/marketing guff out there for the occasional skiers to lap up, that’s certainly where I don’t want this site to head. I might pick out the odd interesting Press Release here or there but you certainly won’t hear me proclaiming ‘Bumper Seasons’ or ‘Iconic Falls Creek Non-Landmarks’ – this place will be for skiers, by skiers.
You will notice that I have ads on the site, so please excuse me for that, but I’d like to be in the position that I can pay people at the resorts to regularly blog about the conditions. I think that would add value to the place. Feel free to use ad-blocking software if you disagree.
That’s enough to get started, no doubt things will naturally evolve from there. I’d like this site to have a community feel, and will be encouraging comments and contributions from all readers. So please, don’t be shy, let me know what you’re thinking.
Richard aka aussieskier.
